Square Enix has launched Final Fantasy Resonance, the first title in the historic Final Fantasy series produced in the HD-2D style, which combines classic pixel art with modern lighting and depth. The game arrived in stores on October 22, 2026 (with the Steam version unlocking globally on October 23 in some regions) for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and PC via Steam and Xbox on PC.
What is Final Fantasy Resonance?
Based on the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Resonance was rebuilt as a full console RPG experience. Players explore the Kingdom of Grandshelt, face enemies in strategic turn-based combat and summon “Visions” — echoes of iconic franchise characters such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light — to aid in battles.
The title celebrates nearly 40 years of Final Fantasy, bringing back classic elements like chocobos, espers and airships, all presented in HD-2D graphics that push the limits of pixel art. A free demo covering the opening through the end of Chapter 1 (about 3 to 5 hours) is available, and progress carries over to the full game.
Why it matters
The HD-2D style gained popularity with titles such as Octopath Traveler and Live A Live. Seeing Square Enix apply this aesthetic to its flagship RPG franchise represents a return to the series’ visual roots with current technology. The suggested price is US$ 49.99 or local equivalent.
The official launch trailer can be viewed on the Square Enix channel, and the official site is square-enix.com/finalfantasyresonance.
