CONFIRMED: Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary: The Crystal Edition, a collection with a single track from each of the 16 mainline games in the series. It is set to launch on 6 January 2027, in CD and vinyl editions.
The concept is deliberately lean: instead of a box set with hours of music, the album picks one emblematic theme per game, in chronological order, from the first Final Fantasy through Final Fantasy XVI. So “One-Winged Angel” represents Final Fantasy VII, “Blinded by Light” represents Final Fantasy XIII and “Away” closes the selection, for Final Fantasy XVI.
Physically, the CD edition gathers all 16 tracks on a single disc, while the vinyl edition spreads them across two LPs. Pre-orders are already open in Japan, at 3,600 yen plus tax for the CD and 8,000 yen plus tax for the vinyl. The North American and European pages were not yet live at announcement, so prices and availability outside Japan have not been confirmed.
The full track list:
- “Main Theme” — Final Fantasy
- “The Rebel Army” — Final Fantasy II
- “Eternal Wind” — Final Fantasy III
- “Theme of Love” — Final Fantasy IV
- “Battle at the Big Bridge” — Final Fantasy V
- “Searching for Friends” — Final Fantasy VI
- “One-Winged Angel” — Final Fantasy VII
- “Force Your Way” — Final Fantasy VIII
- “Not Alone” — Final Fantasy IX
- “Zanarkand” — Final Fantasy X
- “Ronfaure” — Final Fantasy XI
- “The Dalmasca Estersand” — Final Fantasy XII
- “Blinded by Light” — Final Fantasy XIII
- “Torn from the Heavens” — Final Fantasy XIV
- “Somnus (Instrumental Version)” — Final Fantasy XV
- “Away” — Final Fantasy XVI
For fans who have followed the series since 1987, the appeal of the disc is precisely the edit: each track works as a sonic summary of one chapter of the franchise, and the absence of a second theme per game is part of the idea — not a pressing error.
