Nintendo movies will keep coming. During the presentation of its first-half results for the fiscal year ending in March 2027, president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company intends to “keep releasing films” with its partners after the live-action The Legend of Zelda, due on April 30, 2027.
According to Furukawa, Nintendo will work with its partners to craft each film carefully while building a framework that keeps production going in the coming years. The idea is to turn movies into an ongoing business, not a series of one-off releases.
Two billion dollars with Mario
The move is backed by results: Furukawa noted that the animated Mario movies have already grossed more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office. For Nintendo, the films also bring Mario to regions where the video game business has limited reach and to people who do not normally play games.
Nintendo has not announced which franchises will be adapted after Zelda, nor dates for upcoming projects. It has also not confirmed rumors that the Zelda movie could go beyond a single film — the first one still has to open and prove itself at the box office.
The live-action Zelda is directed by Wes Ball and produced by Nintendo, Arad Productions and Sony Pictures. The current date, April 30, 2027, was announced by Shigeru Miyamoto in May 2026, when the release was moved up from May 7 to April 30, 2027.
The announcement comes in Zelda's 40th anniversary year, which already brought the Ocarina of Time remake to the Switch 2, released on November 5: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time chega ao Switch 2 com visuais refeitos e dublagem.
