What is Estpolis Denki I & II
Estpolis Denki was released in 1993. Estpolis Denki II came out in 1995. Both were developed by Neverland Company and published by Taito on the Super Famicom. They are turn-based RPGs featuring heavy storytelling, a powerful soundtrack, and a famous narrative hook: the first game opens with the end of the Battle of the Doom Island; the second acts as a prequel showing how the hero Maxim arrived there.
Partial ports have been released previously. The first game made its way to mobile phones in Japan. The second received an action RPG remake on the Nintendo DS in 2010, published by Square Enix. Until now, however, an official version combining both original games for modern consoles and PC did not exist. That is what Estpolis Denki I & II aims to resolve.
What Changes in This Version
Taito describes the project as a polished port rather than a 3D remake. The original pixel art remains intact. The team promises quality-of-life additions to make the gameplay more comfortable for modern audiences.
The original series planner, Masahide Miyata, is re-reading the entire script. On the Super Famicom, many dialogues relied heavily on hiragana due to cartridge storage limits. This time, the dialogue uses kanji more comprehensively. Miyata wrote on Taito's website that revisiting the conversations brought back memories of production—and that some passages felt too youthful even for him.
Clear River Games, overseeing the Western release, aims to keep the game as close to the original as possible. The Estpolis Denki I & II collection will support Japanese and English in Japan; Korean and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) in Asia; and French, German, and Spanish in the West. The Steam version covers all these languages. Check out the page on Steam.
Why Estpolis Denki I & II Matters Now
For anyone who grew up with 16-bit JRPGs, Lufia II frequently tops lists asking "why hasn't anyone re-released this?". The sequel successfully blended puzzle-filled dungeons, visible map encounters, and a roguelike extra mode. It was also one of the pioneers of the generation in popularizing New Game Plus.
In practice, Estpolis Denki I & II fills a glaring gap: it finally makes it legal and accessible to play both originals on PC and modern hardware. It isn't the cancelled third installment of the trilogy, nor is it the DS action remake. It is the classic pair, featuring text revised by the creator himself.
