Epic Games opened the public Preview of the new Epic Games Launcher yesterday, October 14, 2026. In the official post, the company wrote literally: “Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher that’s way faster and more responsive than the current one, and has a new look.”
The Preview is available for Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon only) and, for the first time, Linux. The old launcher remains available. According to Epic, the average cold start to the store is 5.47 seconds versus 10.07 seconds for Steam — roughly a 46% difference that the company says was verified by a third party.
What does “vibe coding” mean here?
Martin Keely, VP and GM of the Epic Games Store, told PC Gamer and IGN that the team started from scratch. AI was used to write and review new code on a different architecture, replicating existing functionality without copying the old code. The goal is faster development with a smaller team and broader platform support.
The Preview is still “light on features.” Social and account-management tools from the old launcher have not fully migrated. Epic is asking for feedback and warning of bugs. New features already present include a recent games list, a centralized downloads hub, and the ability to import shortcuts from other launcher libraries.
Connection to the AI-first pivot
The announcement arrives a few days after Tim Sweeney declared on X a “huge pivot” at Epic toward “maximum AI acceleration.” Bloomberg also reported that the unannounced Disney shooter (Marvel and Star Wars) was delayed and that the team was told to use AI workflows for code and art, with the phrase “No more hand-written code.”
So far Epic has not named the specific models used for the launcher. The company emphasizes that human developers remain the “visionaries and creative drivers.”
The old launcher stays available and there is no date yet for full migration. Players can try the Preview at launcher.epicgames.com and read the official post at store.epicgames.com.
