EA shuts down BioWare and cancels next Mass Effect after 30 years of legacy

What happened?

Electronic Arts is shutting down BioWare and canceling the next Mass Effect, announcing the closure of the studio responsible for iconic franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The next Mass Effect game in the series, which was in early development, was canceled as part of a restructuring that includes approximately 400 layoffs across the company, representing about 3% of the workforce, with around 50 positions affected at BioWare.

In a statement, COO David Tinson and Chief Studios Officer Cam Weber explained that the company is concentrating investments on strategic priorities such as deepening core franchises, expanding reach, and transforming the business. Projects like the next Mass Effect will not proceed, resulting in the closure of the Edmonton studio.

Why does this matter?

BioWare is one of the most influential studios in RPG history, with over 30 years of legacy including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem. The closure marks the end of an era for complex narratives and moral choices that defined the genre. The move comes months after EA’s acquisition by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, valued at around $55 billion.

Other adjustments include the cancellation of a new The Sims (Project Lotus), downsizing of the skate. team, while projects such as Star Wars Jedi, Marvel’s Iron Man, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and possibly a new Star Wars: Battlefront continue.

What changes in practice?

Fans of Mass Effect and Dragon Age will not have a new game from the original studio in the short term. EA states it will continue investing in sports, shooters, and action-adventure, seeking efficiency after privatization. BioWare published a farewell message thanking players for bringing the worlds to life through choices and debates.
