Blizzard has detailed the first three classes for Diablo 5 following its BlizzCon 2026 announcement: the Demon Hunter and Monk make their return, alongside the debut of the Plague Knight, a heavy-armor knight who spreads pestilence and then consumes it to grow stronger.
The game remains on track for a Spring 2029 release window (between March and June). The premise remains unchanged: in Sanctuary, Diablo has already won, Westmarch has fallen as a Hell outpost, and the player assumes the role of the heir to a destroyed kingdom.

What Happened?
During the Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel, the team confirmed the first batch of character classes. Director Joe Shely described the Plague Knight as a heavy-armor class and "walking death": the character traverses the battlefield spreading disease and pestilence, then consumes that very blight to gain power.
The other two are familiar returning favorites. The Demon Hunter returns with twin crossbows, shadow attacks, and battlefield leaps. The Monk makes a comeback with close-quarters martial arts and sacred power. Blizzard states these are merely the first classes on the road to launch, and the final roster is projected to be the largest in the franchise's history.
What Does This Mean?
The Plague Knight carves out a distinct niche compared to the classic Necromancer. Rather than managing a skeleton army, the core fantasy revolves around a knight who treats plague as a resource: applying, spreading, and absorbing it. There is currently no public skill tree or gameplay footage available for the class.
The rest of the package leans heavily into the Diablo 2 aesthetic. Items will once again take up varying amounts of inventory space based on their size. Gear will feature attribute requirements, set items, runes, and runewords. The team also highlighted a crafting system inspired by Lord of Hatred, the recent Diablo 4 expansion.
Why Does This Matter?
While Diablo 4 remains active, Blizzard has stated it has no plans for major new expansions on the horizon leading up to 2029. The next chapter alters the foundational rules of the series: the ultimate boss doesn't simply wait at the end of the campaign. Instead, Diablo rules the map from the very start, procedurally warping the terrain and turning survivors into corrupted commanders.
Players travel alongside a caravan of allies—including a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and an "unemployed" Treasure Goblin living in a world where greed has lost its meaning. The concept is for this mobile encampment to replace traditional static towns as the primary social and service hub.
What This Doesn't Mean Yet
None of this represents a finalized build. Blizzard's official post classifies the game as being in early development and promises regular updates starting in 2027. There is no complete class list, no confirmed platform lineup for this preview, and no release date more specific than the Spring 2029 window.
