DeepSeek Harness Desktop is out as an official preview for Windows x64 and macOS Apple Silicon. Coverage from AI前线 and 36Kr describes an Electron client that reuses the Harness web UI, starts the local runtime, and opens the same agents, sessions, tools and plugins. Testers saw version 0.1.7-rc.
What happened?
The apps/desktop folder had been in the official deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness repo since late August. Installers are now circulating in Chinese coverage, with in-app updates. Unlike the web app, the desktop client is not a free sign-up: if you have no quota, you need balance or a verified account. You can also paste an official API key.
Why it matters
Harness is DeepSeek’s agent environment. Moving it off the CLI and the browser lowers friction for long sessions on a PC. Profiles, plugins and workspaces sit outside the app folder so updates do not wipe user data.
What changes in practice
The preview still breaks compatibility. Community plugins may fail. Reports distinguish the official DeepSeek client from community shells on GitHub. Treat rc builds as unstable and check the official download page before running third-party executables.
