Crayon Shin-chan: 2026 Movie Shatters Franchise Record with ¥2.7 Billion

The summer movie for Crayon Shin-chan has officially become the highest-grossing entry in the franchise in Japan. In just 45 days in theaters, Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Kikikaikai! Ora no Yōkai Bake-shon (roughly translated as 'Monster Summer Vacation of the Yōkai') surpassed 2.7 billion yen — around US$17 million — with over 2.18 million tickets sold. The milestone was announced this Monday (14) by the official website and confirmed by Cinema Today, Anime News Network, and Crunchyroll News.

What happened?

The 33rd 2D animated film in the series premiered on July 31, 2026. By September 13, it had surpassed the previous record. Japanese reports indicate that the 2024 film, which focused on the Nohara family's dinosaur diary, finished close to 2.5 billion yen. The theatrical movie series has been running since 1993.

During its opening weekend, Crayon Shin-chan ranked 3rd nationwide, bringing in about 441,000 tickets and 539 million yen over three days. The record-breaking run was driven by strong word-of-mouth throughout August and September rather than a massive, singular opening weekend explosion.

What is the movie about?

The Nohara family travels to Akita, the hometown of father Hiroshi, to catch the Omagari fireworks festival. An incident causes yōkai — creatures from Japanese folklore such as the kitsune fox and tengu — to escape from their realm and cause chaos across Japan. Shin-chan and his family end up in the 'yōkai land' and embark on an adventure that blends summer vacation tropes with the series' signature absurd humor.

Masaki Watanabe directs a franchise film for the first time, with a script by Yoshiko Nakamura and animation by Shin-Ei Animation. Toho is distributing. Yumiko Kobayashi returns as the voice of Shin-chan. Guest stars include Sairi Itō as the nine-tailed fox Yako and members of the idol group FRUITS ZIPPER. The theme song is 'Otona ni Nattara' ('When I Grow Up') by TOMOO.

Why does this matter?

In Japan, the summer Crayon Shin-chan movie is an annual ritual, sharing the calendar space with Detective Conan. Smashing the 2D record after years of battling 3D releases and major blockbusters for the same audience proves the franchise still packs theaters — even drawing in fans who just discovered the character this year.

Practically speaking, these numbers give Toho and Shin-Ei a solid justification to greenlight another summer movie for 2027. It also reinforces the idea that Japanese family-friendly comedy can still hold its own against heavy-hitting action spectacles and global IPs at the box office.

What this doesn't mean yet

This record applies nationally and to the franchise itself, not as a global anime box office record. As of now, there is no international release date or streaming announcement tied to this box office gross. The film is still currently playing in theaters in Japan.

Kobayashi celebrated the news by stating that many people 'returned to grandpa's house in Akita' alongside the Nohara family. Watanabe released a special thank-you illustration featuring the family and sparklers.
