Cosmoship Yamato √2199 now has confirmed directors: Hideaki Anno and Yutaka Izubuchi will co-direct the new Space Battleship Yamato feature. The October 5, 2026 announcement is the first animation coproduction between Production I.G and Studio Khara. No release date has been set.
What happened?
An official site and an X account, @yamato_r2199, opened with a teaser visual of the ship Yamato about to launch into space over a devastated landscape. The Japanese title of Cosmoship Yamato √2199 is 宇宙戦艦ヤマト√2199. The √ symbol is read as "root," and the Uchū Senkan prefix is the same one previously translated as Space Battleship or Space Cruiser.
Anno is credited with direction, planning, executive production and design work alongside Izubuchi. Planning is also credited to Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, founder of Production I.G. Shin Office Academy is presenting the project. Izubuchi, the mecha designer and chief director of the remakes that began with Space Battleship Yamato 2199, confirmed his role.
Why it matters
Anno, creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Rebuild films, says he has been a Yamato fan since his second year of junior high. In a note carried by the film site and outlets including Anime News Network and Automaton, he says the project is not only a childhood dream: the aim is to put prayers and wishes for the next generation, and for his own, into the film.
The studio pairing is the other headline. Production I.G and Khara had not shared an anime production before. Anno was already planner and producer of the franchise's 50th-anniversary project announced in 2024, and he said Khara received licenses from Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation to produce new footage. Automaton reports that Cosmoship Yamato √2199 is set to take a different direction from earlier remakes. The original work is credited to Yoshinobu Nishizaki.
What changes in practice
For now, what exists is the announcement, the visual and the core staff. There is no date, voice cast or streaming confirmation. Fans of Evangelion and Yamato can follow the official site and @yamato_r2199, but any plot detail beyond the launch visual is still speculation.
