Anthropic announced on November 6, 2026, through its official @ClaudeDevs account on X, that Claude Code cloud sessions will now set up a repository's environment on their own, on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans.
What changes
In practice, Claude Code works out which dependencies to install, which network hosts the session needs to reach and which API keys the project requires — and saves that environment for the next session on the same repository, without repeating the work.
API keys stay out of the model's reach
According to Anthropic, API keys are saved securely and Claude Code never sees them. The Claude Code documentation describes the mechanism, called network secrets: an Anthropic proxy adds the key to requests after they leave the session's virtual machine, so the key stays out of the model's reach.
How to start
Cloud sessions can start at claude.ai/code, in the desktop app, in the mobile app or from the terminal, with the claude --cloud command. Each session runs on a virtual machine managed by Anthropic and keeps going even with the laptop closed, so you can check on the work later without keeping your computer on.
For people who use Claude Code every day, manually setting up the environment was a barrier on the first use of each repository. With automatic detection, the agent takes care of that step, and the developer's attention goes back to the code. The feature arrives in the same week Anthropic opened the public beta of message threads, which cuts Claude Code's wait by about 35% on long requests.
Limits of the announcement
There are limits to what was announced: the post does not mention the Team and Enterprise plans, does not explain how Claude Code chooses the network access it will request, and does not say whether users approve each saved setting. The documentation, consulted on November 7, still described manual setup of cloud environments.
