K-pop has taken another decisive step toward generative artificial intelligence with the pre-debut of boy group muuo:23. Produced by South Korean company Creation Zipup, the quintet consists of five completely virtual members: TAEWON, HAMIN, YEONWOO, I-HYUN and SEI.
Science-fiction concept and 100% AI production
The group presents itself as observers from the 23rd century sent to 2026 to study human feelings lost in the future. The music video for the title track OVERSHOOT (part of the digital single NEVERTHELESS, which also includes Nectar) was created entirely with generative AI tools, without real locations, actors or traditional filming.
In addition to the music distributed by CJ ENM, the project includes a transmedia ecosystem: webnovel, digital photocards and a proprietary app that enables interactive AI chats with the “members.”
Divided reaction and comparison with other virtual idols
While studios see advantages (no physical wear, scandals or schedule limits), the public is divided. Criticisms point to the lack of human warmth and visual resemblance to real idols (such as members of RIIZE, TWS and others), generating “copy” accusations. Previous groups like MAVE:, SUPERKIND, aespa (avatars) and PLAVE (motion capture) already explored virtual territory, but muuo:23 positions itself as one of the first fully generated by generative AI.
The industry now debates whether algorithms can convey the “soul” that defines K-pop, while platforms test labeling for synthesized content.
