Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement Gameplay Revealed at TGS 2026, Confirms 2027 Release

505 Games and ArtPlay used Tokyo Game Show 2026 and the Xbox broadcast to drop a brand new trailer for Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, the prequel to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night spearheaded by Koji Igarashi (IGA).

What happened?

The gameplay-focused video showcases characters, environments, enemies, and mechanics never seen in this much detail before. Set in 16th-century England years before Ritual of the Night, the story follows Leonard Brandon of the Church's Black Wolves and Alexander Kyteler, a White Stag knight and the sole survivor of a previous expedition against the Demon Lord Elias.

The launch, previously slated for 2026, remains locked in for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Back in August, IGA stated that the game had entered the final stretch of development and that the extra time would be used to showcase more content—and the Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement trailer is the first major drop from this phase.

What does this mean?

This is not just another gothic metroidvania. ArtPlay describes a map larger than anything seen in the series so far—the Ethereal Castle—featuring a dynamic dawn, day, dusk, and night cycle that alters exploration. There is also a buddy system: Leo and Alex team up, pointing to combat and traversal designed for two characters simultaneously rather than just a lone hero.

A system dubbed Epiphany promises to unlock moves and abilities in the heat of battle. Outside the dungeons, the package includes crafting, cooking, and visual armor customization—a clear legacy of Ritual of the Night, but dialed up on personalization.

Why does it matter?

IGA is the legendary name most closely tied to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and the modern Bloodstained lineage. The prequel's original creative director, SHUTARO (Shutaro Iida), passed away in February 2026. The team stated at the time that they would carry the project forward to honor his vision. Seeing concrete gameplay at TGS following the delay is the strongest signal yet that Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement is more than just vaporware.

For newcomers: a metroidvania is a subgenre where you explore a sprawling interconnected map, unlock abilities, and backtrack to previous areas with new tools—sharing the exact DNA of Symphony and Ritual of the Night.

What it doesn't mean yet

There is no exact release date within 2027, nor any confirmation of a Nintendo Switch 2 version in this announcement. The trailer showcases the tone and gameplay loop, not the final game size or polish level. Anyone wanting to watch the full video can check out the official Steam page and Gematsu's coverage.
