ASUS launches XG Core: compact eGPU with Radeon RX 9060 XT LP 16GB via USB4

ASUS has announced the XG Core Radeon RX 9060 XT LP 16GB GDDR6, a compact external graphics solution that adds discrete GPU power to laptops, mini PCs and gaming handhelds via USB4 without any internal modifications.

What is the ASUS XG Core eGPU?

Measuring just 144 x 117 x 39 mm, the device fits easily into a gear bag and offers portability for users who need extra graphics power on demand. It uses AMD RDNA 4 architecture on the Low Profile version of the Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB of GDDR6.

Connection is via USB4 at up to 40 Gbps and it also supports compatible Thunderbolt 3 systems. The unit includes HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, allowing external monitors to be connected directly.

Gaming, creation and AI use

Beyond gaming and video or 3D editing, the ASUS XG Core eGPU supports local AI workloads such as image generation and model inference in tools like ComfyUI, LM Studio and Ollama. GPU Tweak III software allows adjustment of clocks, voltage and fans.

Technical reports indicate power is limited to around 75W, resulting in boost clocks around 1,600 MHz — well below full desktop versions of the same GPU. ASUS has not yet announced a price or release date.

Why it matters

With the popularity of handhelds like the ROG Ally X and thin laptops, a compact and easy-to-connect eGPU like the ASUS XG Core expands possibilities without requiring a full desktop. Local AI support also reflects the trend of running models on personal hardware.
