ASUS begins shipping ZenWiFi BN12, the world's first WiFi 8 mesh system

ASUS has announced the start of shipping for the ZenWiFi BN12, presented as the world's first WiFi 8 mesh system. Based on the draft IEEE 802.11bn standard, it prioritizes ultra-high reliability rather than peak speeds alone, with coverage of up to 7,000 square feet (about 650 m²) in a two-node configuration.

The system is tri-band, with theoretical speeds of up to 1,376 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 5,764 Mbps on 5 GHz and 11,529 Mbps on 6 GHz, totaling about 19 Gbps. Each unit features eight internal antennas, a 2.6 GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and dual 10 Gbps ports for high-speed wired backhaul, plus 2.5 Gbps options and USB for mobile tethering.

Why does it matter?

WiFi 8 (802.11bn) is still in draft stage, with ratification expected in 2028, but ASUS is already selling hardware that leverages features such as Multi-AP Coordination and better mid- to long-range performance. This benefits homes with many IoT devices, 4K/8K streaming, cloud gaming and local AI applications, where stability matters more than maximum speed.

ASUS Smart AiMesh integrates these capabilities for seamless roaming and traffic optimization via Adaptive QoE, prioritizing games and calls. It also includes AiProtection, parental controls and network segmentation for IoT.

The shipping announcement on October 20, 2026 follows the earlier launch of the ROG Rapture GT-BN98 (WiFi 8 gaming router) in early October. The official product page is already live on the ASUS website, confirming the specifications.
