What happened?
Apple Intelligence China has been approved, according to Tim Cook, Apple's executive chairman, in a Shanghai interview. A test version will be released later in October 2026.
The first features of Apple Intelligence China include real-time translation, writing tools, and photo Clean Up. The AI-powered Siri will not be part of this initial phase.
Why is this important?
China is one of Apple's largest markets. The approval of Apple Intelligence China follows local generative AI rules and involves collaboration with Alibaba models such as Qwen for compliance.
This allows Apple to offer AI features on iPhones, iPads, and Macs sold or used in China, competing with local Android makers. Reports from Reuters and China Daily confirm Cook's statements.
What changes in practice?
Chinese users will soon be able to test productivity and translation tools of Apple Intelligence China. Advanced Siri and more complex image generation are expected later, possibly in December with iOS 27.3, according to Bloomberg reports.
Cook's visit also included meetings with Chinese authorities on trade and AI, highlighting Apple's business expansion in the country.
