Apple announced on Wednesday (October 28) the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display, marking the debut of a touchscreen on the Mac and the adoption of tandem OLED technology in its professional notebooks.
What happened?
The model comes in 14- and 16-inch versions, equipped with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. The PROLED XDR display offers up to 2,000 nits peak brightness (HDR and SDR), a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz, and P3 + Adobe RGB color coverage. The touch sensor is integrated directly into the panel, enabling multi-touch gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and file dragging.
Other new features include the Dynamic Island at the top of the screen (similar to iPhone), a thinner and lighter design (14-inch starting at 3 pounds / 1.36 kg), a glowing Apple logo on the lid, and support for up to 128 GB of unified memory and 16 TB of storage.
Pricing and availability
The 14-inch with M5 Pro starts at $2,899, and the 16-inch at $3,399. M5 Max versions start at $4,499 (14") and $4,799 (16"). Pre-orders are already open on Apple’s website, with deliveries starting November 6 in more than 30 countries.
Why it matters
Apple resisted a touchscreen on the Mac for years, preferring the trackpad. The arrival of touch alongside high-performance OLED represents a significant shift for professional creation, editing, and design workflows. The premium pricing reflects its top-tier positioning.
