Anthropic launches Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent that acts for you

Anthropic opened a research preview this week of Claude Duet, a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent. Instead of waiting for commands, Duet comes to you with what needs your attention, completes the tasks you ask, keeps working even when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf.

What happened?

Claude Duet was officially announced on October 21, 2026, and is available as a standalone app for iOS and Android, plus the web version at claude.ai. For now, the research preview is released via waitlist for Pro and Max plan subscribers in the United States and uses the same usage limits as regular Claude. It is built around the Claude Opus 5.5 model.

The agent sends a short morning brief of the most important items across connected apps, monitors those apps throughout the day, and only interrupts when something truly needs attention. Tasks range from scheduling meetings to building dashboards, financial forecasts, or even prototyping and creating web apps. Everything runs on a cloud virtual machine with its own browser, so the user’s phone or laptop does not need to stay on.

Why does it matter?

The race for proactive agents is accelerating. Claude Duet arrives as a direct response to offerings like OpenAI’s Dots and Meta’s Muse. The difference Anthropic highlights is the focus on judgment: the agent decides what needs you, what can wait, and when to ask for confirmation. It inherits memory, skills, and already-connected apps from the Claude account, reducing setup.

Safety was also a priority. Before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting anything, Duet shows exactly what it is about to do and waits for approval. Credentials are never seen directly by the model. Anthropic stresses that this is an early version and that the agent can still misjudge urgency.

What changes in practice?

For professionals and small-business owners, Duet promises to work as a digital “chief of staff.” It connects to more than 6,000 tools in the Claude Marketplace (Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, HubSpot, Docusign, Shopify, etc.). Examples include checking overdue invoices and drafting reminders, preparing payroll, creating Canva campaigns, or assembling a briefing before a meeting.

In practice, the user sends a text or voice message and the agent works in the background. When it finishes or needs a decision, it notifies. Access is still limited to the US and via waitlist, and background usage consumes plan limits. Anthropic plans to expand later based on feedback from early users.
