Android 18 has appeared for the first time in an official Google schedule: the Android Dev Summit 2026 agenda. The developer event returns on October 28 and 29 at Google’s Bay View campus in Mountain View, and one session promises “powerful new graphics features” in the next OS.
What happened?
Google published the programme for Android Dev Summit, a developer conference that had not run in this format since 2022. One talk is titled “Elevate your apps with the latest graphics features in Jetpack Compose and Android 18.”
The session description mentions mesh gradients, progressive blurs and new visual effects in Jetpack Compose, Android’s UI toolkit, while keeping performance, battery life and frame rates in check. There is still no launch date or public preview for Android 18.
Why it matters
Until now the number 18 only circulated in rumors. Putting the name on the official timetable confirms the next major release is in development and that interface graphics will be one of the pillars. The summit will also include an Android leadership keynote and tracks on AI experiences, Android XR, app foundations and tools.
What changes in practice
Nothing changes on phones today for most users. For developers, the Summit should show visual-effect APIs and how to connect apps to Gemini, Search and Android’s intelligence system. There will be a livestream and an Extended event in London. In-person seats in Mountain View are limited to selected developers.
