AMD brings FSR 4.1 to Xbox Series X|S and ROG Ally handhelds

AMD has announced the expansion of FSR 4.1, its machine learning-based upscaling technology, to a wider range of devices, including Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, as well as handhelds like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X. FSR 4.1 arrives to improve performance and image quality on more platforms.

What happened?

According to AMD's official announcement and statements from Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, FSR 4.1 will arrive soon on Xbox Series X|S. The technology is already available for Radeon RX 6000 GPUs, Ryzen AI Max and AI 9 processors, and Z2 Extreme and Z2 A handhelds via the Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver.

FSR 4.1 uses machine learning to reconstruct high-quality images from lower resolutions, offering better visual quality than previous versions like FSR 3.1, along with support for frame generation and ray reconstruction. This allows developers to deliver better experiences without requiring more powerful hardware.

Why it matters

This brings Xbox closer to parity with PlayStation, which already has PSSR on PS5 Pro and QSSR on base PS5. Especially on Series S and handhelds, the gains in performance and image quality could be significant, extending the useful life of current hardware.

Developers will get access to the tool "very soon" according to Microsoft, enabling better performance in supported games. There is still no exact arrival date on consoles, but the long-term partnership between AMD and Xbox includes future plans with FSR Diamond on Project Helix.
