Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V surpasses 6 billion chips for AI and automotive

Alibaba has announced that its Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V architecture has powered more than 6 billion chips shipped, with a focus on artificial intelligence and automotive systems. Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V marks a milestone in China's push for semiconductor independence.

What happened?

On October 19, 2026, during the RISC-V Summit China in Shenzhen, Meng Jianyi, chief scientist at Alibaba's Damo Academy, revealed that more than 6 billion chips based on the Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V IP have been shipped. Damo Academy also unveiled the XuanTie E908A, an automotive processor IP that meets ASIL-B and ASIL-D safety standards, aimed at domain controllers and vehicle gateways. It also announced a roadmap including the high-performance C950A for autonomous driving, expected by the end of 2027, with five times the performance of existing automotive RISC-V products.

Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V includes C, E, and R series for high performance, energy efficiency, and real-time processing. The architecture is open-source (RISC-V), allowing developers to design processors with less reliance on foreign technologies like Arm or x86, especially relevant amid US export restrictions.

Why does this matter?

RISC-V is an open instruction-set architecture, an alternative to proprietary designs from Intel and Arm. Alibaba was one of the first in China to invest in it via T-Head. The 6 billion chip milestone (cumulative) of Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V shows real adoption in IoT, industrial, consumer, and now expanding into AI and vehicles. According to Omdia forecasts cited by Meng, global RISC-V processor shipments are expected to grow nearly 30% annually and account for about 25% of the worldwide market by 2030.

This supports China's self-sufficiency strategy in semiconductors for AI, reducing vulnerability to sanctions. The C950, for example, is positioned as one of the most powerful RISC-V CPU IPs, with support for models like Qwen.

What changes in practice?

For the industry, it means more open-source hardware options for AI edge, servers, and automotive embedded systems. Chip manufacturers can license the Alibaba XuanTie RISC-V IP and integrate it into SoCs without Arm royalties. For China, it accelerates local production of chips for AI data centers and smart vehicles. End users may see more devices and services based on this technology, with potential for lower costs and greater regional innovation.

The announcement strengthens the global RISC-V ecosystem, with companies like Alibaba leading in volume in China.
