AION 2 goes free on PC: NCSoft's MMORPG makes the sky a battlefield

AION 2 opened its free-to-play PC launch on October 5, 2026, on Steam and NCSoft's PURPLE launcher. The open-world MMORPG, built in Unreal Engine 5, treats the sky as a battlefield: every character is a Daeva, and flight is part of exploration and combat, not just travel.

What happened?

NCSoft had delayed the worldwide release from September to October 5, as reported by Gematsu. Before that, Founder's Pack buyers received five days of advance access, from September 30 to October 4. The base game is now free to play; the paid packs were a way to start earlier and pick up extras, not a requirement after launch.

In South Korea and Taiwan, AION 2 had already been live since November 19, 2025, on PC, iOS, and Android. Monday's global release is PC-only. The official Steam description says the world is 36 times larger than the original AION and that verticality was designed into every region and encounter.

Why it matters

AION, from 2008, was known for wings and aerial battles. The sequel tries to recover that identity on a current engine, Unreal Engine 5, in a week already crowded with live-service attention and big releases such as Gears of War: E-Day, set for October 6.

The story is set about 200 years after the first game, in the world of Atreia, with the conflict between celestial and demonic factions. NCSoft recommends an SSD. Server times and launch-day maintenance should be checked in the company's official notices and on the Steam page.

What changes in practice?

  • Players who skipped the Founder's Pack can now join for free on PC.
  • The game is on Steam and PURPLE; no console version was announced for this global launch.
  • Aerial combat is the core pitch, not a fast-travel extra.
