The Ace Combat 8 cinematic opening, about 16 minutes long, is now live from Bandai Namco and Bandai Namco Aces. It lays out the campaign hook for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve days before the October 2, 2026 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC via Steam.
What happened?
The Ace Combat 8 cinematic landed on September 24 on the official Bandai Namco Entertainment America and PlayStation channels. The story starts in July 2029 in Strangereal. The Federation of Central Usea (FCU) is hit by a lightning invasion from the Republic of Sotoa. The protagonist is pulled aboard the aging carrier FCU Endurance, already crowded with refugees and far from the front.
On the ship, the pilot inherits the name Wings of Theve, a legendary ace tied to the capital Theve. The film itself makes clear that the legend is morale propaganda. The previous bearer, Jan "Rex" Cope, is not the invincible ace the FCU sold to the public. Cope dies after a clash with a squadron led by Shadow 022. The player survives, takes the callsign and command of Joker Flight.
Why it matters
Ace Combat has always mixed arcade dogfights with cinematic storytelling. This time Project Aces ships the entire prologue before launch instead of a two-minute trailer. The premise flips the ace myth: the player does not earn the reputation first; they inherit a fake symbol and must live up to it while the FCU collapses.
The Deluxe Edition unlocks early access on September 29. Pre-orders include a playable F-14A and Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War. The collector package adds an artbook, two LPs and a Premium Ace Pass Plus voucher.
